It was a day not unlike any other. We had spent it together, running errands, catching up, and eating at our favorite restaurant. But when we arrived back at his place, he blindfolded me and led me to the bedroom.
It wasn’t my birthday and I didn’t think I’d forgotten an anniversary (but when you have the memory of a goldfish, anything is possible). He sat me down on the bed and placed something in my lap. I opened my eyes and tentatively fingered a small black box.
I looked up at him. “Open it,” he said gently. And so I did, gasping when I examined it’s contents. Inside was a beautiful and sparkly necklace, the diamonds carefully arranged in a circle. He smiled up at me, reached inside the box, and clasped it around my neck.
From that day forward, it accompanied me everywhere. I proudly wore it to work and it was the perfect accessory for all my little black dresses. I loved the elegant antique design and the fact that it had been given to me by someone I cared about so deeply.
But a year later marked the beginning of the tumultuous shitstorm and the end of our relationship, and I began to grow resentful of the necklace. I kept it hidden beneath a pile of papers, hoping that out of sight would keep it out of mind. When that didn’t work, I wanted it the hell out of my apartment. I didn’t need any reminders of him in my sanctuary. I’d been busy burying him in my past and this token was the final piece that kept him fresh in my memory.
So it was that I paid a visit to my neighborhood jeweler one day. “I want this out of my life,” I told the sweet man at the counter (who had clearly seen many women in my position before). Once we had agreed on a price, I bounced out of there, happy for the extra cash in my pocket and relieved to be rid of that necklace once and for all.
Had I bought it for myself, it may have seen me through other relationships and attended fancy dinner parties with friends, family members, and lovers. Maybe it would have grown old with me and I could have given it to my daughter one day.
If diamonds are a woman’s best friend, why do we wait for others to buy them for us?
Check this out, ya’ll (from Diamond.com). I think I’m in love…

…It’s just a rock :p
My mother waited for nearly 35 years for my father to buy a diamond for her. (Given they were young hippies when they married, my mother never even had an engagement ring.) Finally, sick of waiting, she went out and bought herself a pair of absolutely stunning diamond earrings a few years ago. The next Christmas? Yeah, my father bought her a diamond necklace to match. Go figure.
The lesson I learned in that? We can’t wait for anyone to give us what we truly want, diamonds or otherwise.

You are right… why have I never bought anything like that for myself?!?!? As of last April, I inherited a husband and by default, a wedding ring. My ring was the first “diamond” anything I’d ever placed on my body and I love it so much I wonder why I didn’t ever get something on my own sooner? I think you should definitely buy yourself the necklace for Christmas. 🙂 Btw, I couldn’t visit your blog frog community. Link broken, maybe? Just wanted to let you know.
I am so glad that none of my exes ever bought me any jewelry. I would have had to get rid of it too. It sucks when something so beautiful has such a bad memory attached to it. I have to say though that necklace that you linked to is gorgeous! I think that you deserve something pretty like that just for you with no bad memories attached.

you raise a good point. I sold some jewelry my ex boyfriend gave me and then was kicking myself years later when the price of gold skyrocketed – doh!
I wish I had thought to sell the necklace my ex gave me. Instead I just gave it back to him. Like you, I just couldn’t look at it/wear it and not think of him. He didn’t get it.
On the upside…I made my first official Tiffany & Co. purchase yesterday, a cute little necklace for myself and I’m thrilled it will never have any bad memories attached to it!
You just introduced me to a very bad website LOL Look sparklies!

I have a box of jewelry from exes as well – now I know what to do with it!! When my hubby and I were younger and broke up for a bit I bought myself a beautiful middle finger ring so he would have something pretty to look at when I gave him the finger. 😉 I was a sassy young thing!!!!

It sounds like you have officially let go! Clearing the last bit of cobwebs out is always the most difficult. Well done! I’m not clicking on the link while at work, I don’t think I’d get anything done 🙂

This reminded me of Samantha’s giant diamond ring in Sex & the City 2. We should absolutely buy lovely little things for ourselves.

Why do we wait for someone else to give us diamonds. I like your point of not waiting for someone else to fulfill you and give you what you want because then that becomes so attached to that particular person versus you and who you are. Obviously this has gotten me thinking. Thanks.

You know…that’s a darn good question. We should treat ourselves more often to those little treasures. I hope you have since purchased yourself some diamonds (or pearls for that matter) that have no strings attached 🙂
My father is a jeweler, and my ex once bought a necklace from him that my dad actually made. When we broke up, I wanted that necklace as far away from me as possible. So, I went to my dad and traded him for a diamond peace sign, a symbol of bad things exiting and peace entering my life :).

Good call getting that reminder out of your jewelry box and out of your life. It has been so great getting to know you though your blog these past several months. Hope Santa brings you a nice, hippie boyfriend who treats you like a queen. 😉
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Hope you bought yourself something else nice with the money. You earned it! I think it’s fab for women to buy themselves jewelry! We shouldn’t wait!
Happy Holidays!!!!!!!!
