I sense from your comments that quite a few of you are disappointed in me for ending things with Jim so suddenly. We’ve since communicated via text a few times and I’m hoping to see him again in the near future, because I really, really like him… just not like that. And every time he sends me a “thinking about you” text or tells me we should go to New Orleans together for Jazz Fest, I get a little sad that I didn’t develop those feelings for him (but also, isn’t it too soon to say those things to a person? After two dates?? Oh my god, I have officially grown a penis).
But I did promise you an update of my date last Thursday.
I laid out my clothes the night before because I am a giant nerd and wanted to embrace my inner 15-year-old. Cute sweater dress, black stockings, sparkly earrings, winter boots (what can you do? It had just snowed). I was a complete ball of nerves all day. I couldn’t stop fidgeting with my hair at work and I was unable to concentrate. I had been communicating with Ethan* via Match for a few weeks and I really liked him. He had me at “I went to 20 Phish shows last year and decided to cut back… so I only went to 17 this year.” I gathered the following from his profile: good sense of humor, steady job, laid-back but willing to try new things, handsome. And, as if that wasn’t enough, he also plays the mandolin and is on a skeeball league.
I was smitten with him on paper. But since chemistry is always the deciding factor, I didn’t want to get my hopes up.
We agreed to meet at the Brass Monkey in the meatpacking district (not to be confused with the Brass Rail which is where I went on this date the week before). I relaxed as soon as I saw him. Though he had a bit of extra weight around the belly (not a dealbreaker), he looked just as he did in his photos and he flashed me a beautiful, sincere smile when he saw me enter the bar. Swoon. We made our way upstairs where we chatted for hours, comparing our favorite venues (and the various lawns) where we had seen Phish. I tried to convince him to attend the rumored Virginia shows this summer. He asked about my family as I picked at the hummus. I giggled and played with my hair. He was genuinely supportive when I told him it was my lifelong dream to pursue a career as a writer.
We made it look so easy. Why can’t all dates be like this?
I didn’t want it to end. But once it got late, he offered to walk me back to the Path train and asked me to text him when I made it home. He told me he wanted to take me out again when he returns from a snowboarding trip next week. We said our goodbyes and he gave me a soft kiss. I don’t know if I just wasn’t expecting it or if it knocked the wind right out of my sails but I had to take a moment to compose myself before descending the steps.
I really like this one. Enough to think about him the whole weekend and then freak out about him taking two days to return an email.
I am such a girl.
*Names of the innocent (or not so innocent) are always changed here. But what are the odds that Ethan and Jackson (the infamous ex) actually do share the same name? Just my luck. I promise not to hold that against him though.
Yeah for a happy date! And a handsome one, no less.

Yipeee!! I’m so glad it went well and there was chemistry. I need to heed what you did and start picking my clothes out the night before…maybe then I’d realize I need to do laundry. I hope things continue to go in a promising direction. I understand the weirdness for you with the name thing…who says the universe doesnt’ have a sense of humor? 😛

YAAAAAAAY! I too am plagued by the name thing… there have been at LEAST 3 or 4 guys I’ve met and liked with the same name as my ex-husband. It’s annoying, but definitely not a dealbreaker. YAY for kisses that knock your socks off! YAY for successful dates! YAY for having an array to choose from. You seriously rock. 100%. *MUAH*
Yay, sounds like a nice date! Love that he’s so into Phish.

You had me at mandolin player. 🙂 You are the second of my blog friends to have a swoon-worthy date recently, woot! So happy for you, I hope this leads a super-special second date.
Like I said in the previous comment. I dated 3 Daves and eventually married one of them! Oh how I miss that initial butterfly nervous feeling! Now don’t’ get me wrong, I still get the occasional butterflies with the hubs, but I will never forget the first time I actually realized that I liked him. I can’t wait to hear more about this guy! So it was a good thing that you broke things off with the first guy!

Reading your blog is like a trip down memory lane when it comes to the places you go. I wonder if we were ever at the same place when i was there? trippy!
Anyway, I’m so glad this one gave you butterflies and you’re still feeling them! Please don’t take so long to fill us in on the next one, k? 🙂

how fun!! isn’t the beginning so exciting and dreamy? it’s true that some people who seem to have no chemistry in the beginning end up being your true love. years ago i told the mister that i would never date him because he wasn’t my type. never say never, right? 😉 but there’s nothing like those other dates, like with ethan, where you hit off AND have immediate chemistry. i say don’t worry too much about who’s “the right one” (as if there’s such a thing), and just enjoy yourself, whether it’s flirting, dating, steamy sex, or building solid friendships.

Aw, this guy sounds promising!
Honey, any man that is lucky enough to land you, is a blessed man.
I’d marry you, but I’m already taken.
I hope this blooms into something special!
Sounds like a sweet date. It is very funny/ironic that he has the same name as your ex but it happens. He sounds promising. I especially like the end of the date sounds so romantic. SWOON! You are almost convincing me to give match a try! We’ll see…

I was disappointed about Jim so thank you for this 😉 How fun? Laying out your clothes and heart-racing first dates. Sounds wonderful. Can’t wait to hear about the next one. You’re such a doll and you deserve the best so I really do hope that this guy is worthy of you. xo

Stopping by from SITS. Sounds like a great date. Even if it doesn’t “go” anywhere at least you had a great date.
