Don’t ever let your parents try to pimp you out, especially at a Passover seder. My parents have actually never tried to set me up on a blind date before so last night they decided to make up for 30 years of lost time. Our seder was at my aunt’s NYC apartment and my cousin and I arrived just before sundown after hitting up a happy hour. We had some new guests joining us this year: my aunt’s best friend and her son (we’ll call him “Luke”).
After a brief introduction, I discovered that Luke is taking philosophy classes in New York and is originally from California. Very cute. My mom appeared to be deeply engaged in conversation with the young man so I made my rounds, greeting the rest of the family and filling up my wine glass.
After some time, I headed back into the living room only to hear the following words come out of my father’s mouth: “She’s part of the fish people.” At first I thought he was explaining to the attractive young guest that I was a member of an exclusive pescatarian fundamentalist group when it dawned on me that he was actually referring to the band Phish. No! What was he doing?? I overheard my mother chime in about String Cheese Incident and Luke smiled, appearing to be very amused by the impromptu game of “let’s see how much we can embarrass our daughter.” As if that wasn’t bad enough, my mom orchestrated an extremely uncomfortable game of musical chairs so that we could be seated together. Not at all obvious or anything. As the evening went on, I learned some more details about Luke. Apparently he is 10 years my junior and he may in fact already have a girlfriend. Good looking out, guys!
And this is why I will never have another boyfriend. Good luck to all potential suitors.
My brother tried the blind date thing for me a couple of times. After awhile it becomes sorta like a game in that you go out with the person just to see how off the mark your friends/family are when they tell you, “She’s PERFECT for you!”
I now realize very few people must really know me.
Good luck, it’s gets better and more fun if you make a game of it.
Oh my!!! As usual, another entertaining read, but they are fun bunch at your expense huh? 🙂
awww…gotta give your parents props for trying!!!! lol. that statement your father made about being “part of the fish people” sounds like something my dad would have said. 🙂 i would have liked to have been a fly on the wall during that musical chairs game!!!!! 🙂 i love your parents!!! miss you, my friend! <3
Charllote dont be Embarrassed. Make fun of them all right back. 🙂
I didnt know you did seders?

Oh, I feel for you! I remember a few months before my now fiance and I got together, I was at a wedding with no date, and I kept getting the whole, ‘oh don’t worry, it’ll happen one day…’ The funny thing is, I wasn’t! lol
I remember the days of being set up. And I think there were even times I thought I was when I wasn’t! Happy Passover and Happy Easter.
Thanks for your comment on my blog:) And I love your header!
Oh that suuuckkkks. Parents should never be involved until it’s wedding time. hah. Youre a fish person.
HA! Parents cannot be trusted!! My mom set me up with a waiter that she thought was cute and who worked at her favorite restaurant. We dated for two weeks before I found out that he had once been on house arrest for stabbing his neighbor in the head. AWE.SOME.
At least it makes for a good story though, right? 🙂
what??? LOL!!! that’s totally crazy. THANKS, MUM! i guess that was the last time she tried setting you up 😉 but yea–those always make for the best stories.
so demi moore. i love it. maybe your parents are on to something?
LOL oh no!! That is too funny!
Stopping by from SITS – congrats on your day!
Well, at least you got a funny story to tell out of it! So glad my parents never tried anything like that . Happy SITS Day!

Hi Charlotte! Did you ever see “Kissing Jessica Stein?” I think you would totally appreciate the Passover scene if you haven’t seen it all ready. It all sounds very familiar…except for the Gay part. Anyway, I love hearing humorous stories from a fellow “tribe” member! I myself ended up with a Shegitz much to the disappointment of Mom and Dad, but 13 years later we are still going strong. As my husband puts it, “it feels like we’ve only been married for 10 minutes…under water” Ba Dum Dum! Looking forward to more of your posts!
Lola
oh that’s too funny! I actually met mey husband on a blind date set up by my dad so you never know, it might work out sometime!!

Ha! The parental filter in full effect!
“Fish People.” *snort* You know – from under the sea.
Isn’t it strange how much humor comes from discomfort?
