I don’t usually like to go on blind dates. I find that I’m never a good match for any of the suitors I’m set up with and matchmaking tends to freak me out (too many expectations). So it was with a bit of trepidation that I allowed my cousin’s girlfriend to talk me into meeting up with her coworker—an extremely smart guy by the name of Ariel. We had been emailing back and forth and he seemed sweet enough so I figured I’d give him—and blind dating—a chance.
We agreed to meet after work on Friday. I spotted him right away at the counter of the intimate wine bar he had recommended on 30th Street. He looked just as he did in his pictures. Handsome. Tall. Kind smile. As soon as he reached down to give me a tight squeeze, I instantly felt comfortable. Awkward pauses were kept to a minimum and he kept the conversation interesting for the many hours we sat on our stools. He’s also wicked smart, ya’ll. I hope I didn’t come across as a total bonehead. That happens sometimes.
There’s a bit of a catch though. He knows about my blog. I don’t know if he’s actively reading it but he has perused it which is something I’ve never come across with anyone I have dated in the past. On the one hand, it relieves a bit of stress. On the other, it means I can’t be as true to my feelings as I’d like because I’m scared he’ll read a review of our date. I will say for the record that Ariel was a true gentleman and we are currently coordinating plans to meet up again.
In other dating news: remember the Albanian named Bear I met recently while out dancing? I sort of let it go when he started up with the sexting but he was so persistent that he convinced me to grab a drink with him. He calls me “sweety,” thinks I’m “funy,” and would like to “lain next to (me),” so clearly we’re soul mates (I’ll try to overlook the glaring typos). I’ve decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. I want to be fair. He could be a very nice, respectable gentleman named Bear who I just so happened to meet in a club, right?
I’ve yet to finalize plans with Roberto, but we’re working on something. He’s sort of fallen to the bottom of my list. I was annoyed when he insisted I come to a lounge in Astoria (where he lives) on our first date. As my friend Emily pointed out, he’s either extremely lazy or hoping to get lucky. Either way, I’m not sure I like my odds.
In completely not-related-to-anything-news: I would like to extend a very special thank-you to my buddy Austin who repaired my toilet seat. Not that I’ve been parading men through my apartment or anything, but the damn seat has been loose for weeks and not one of the suitors I’ve paraded through my apartment has done anything to fix it. Austin was kind enough to get on all fours and get ‘er done. Thank you, Austin!
Can you email me separately from this and let me know the deeeeets….please! 🙂
This is one of the reasons I can’t be as free on my blog, because too many friends read it and some of the guys used to and might still. I kind of hope they do still in a purely selfish way, in that they may still be interested (Cub #1 coughcough), but you’re right it does cause the censor to come out.
3 guys huh? Apparently that’s how you’re supposed to do it so you can actively compare them to each other and see who really is right for you.
Hmmm….I like the feel Ariel gives off in this post…I also think that’s a sexy name for a guy, kind of exotic. Bear also sounds…well…at least fun! His name reminds me of these gorgeous hunks that are in the current book series I’m reading so maybe that’s why naughty things come to mind haha. I can’t blame you for being peeved about Roberto, that would annoy me as well. I’m looking forward to seeing how these guys play out! Oh, and yay for the fixed toilet seat! 😀
Oh weird, did he tell you he knew about your blog? That’s so awkward. I didn’t start blogging until I got married, but I am still super censoring about my family and friends, and esp. work. Which can be frustrating sometimes because the aspect of it being an outlet is lessened.
Just started reading your blog. I’m intrigued by your prospects!
I know what you mean about the mixed feelings that come with having an open blog. Most of the time, its fantasticccc but other times, I wish I could lock it for a very small handful of people – haha. But I’m glad to hear the date went well! 🙂
And thank you so much for all the kind words on my recent blog posts, both comments very much so made my day! xx dear!
Way to git er dunn, Austin! Good luck with Bloggy Boy!
Ooh, mystery and intrigue! Heh heh. All the best with it, hon! As for Bear…beware the bear! Okay, I’ll stop with the lameness now. You’re right, he could be a perfectly respectable guy. And YOU come across as a total bonehead? Dude, please. That’s crazy talk (and then some!).
I’d just be careful with him reading your blog. I had an ex who read one of my old blogs… it resulted in him knowing SOOOO much about me and me knowing less about him. I hated it.
oh man a guy knowing about and reading my blog would totally freak me out….I’d want to be as honest as possible but that could be weird sort of “bearing your soul” to someone on the internet.
anyway…girl I am soo impressed and jealous with what you’ve got going on!!! you are on a roll!! keep breaking hearts and taking names 😉 or well not breaking hearts but stealing them…whichever it is have fun!!!
If Austin were not a friend, I would give him big points for fixing the toilet. In my very humble experience, male suitors can be divided into two categories. Bucket A = long term potential. Bucket B = short term recreation. Both have their place. Men can rarely be both. Sexting during courtship or inviting you home too soon makes me want to guess Bucket B.
There is something to be said for giving people the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes they can suprise you! Aaaand sometimes they can be exactly what you expected. Just keep your expectations in check and have fun!
Also, congrats on the fixed toilet seat :)!
I imagine Blind Dates are nervewracking.
I’m glad your toilet seat is repaired!
Thanks for stopping by my blog!
Well kudos to Austin for helping! Blind dates are so nerve-wracking, but it sounds like it went pretty well! Interesting that he reads your blog too..
Someone has a full dance card. haha Glad your date with Ariel went well. Definitely a little awkward that he knows about your blog.
SaucyB’s last blog… What’s Going on in the Bedroom?

Props for the blind date! I think giving people the benefit of the doubt is a good character trait and shows maturity. Can’t wait to hear more!
I decided long ago to tell boys right away that I have a blog and there is a chance they could end up getting written about. There’s been no issues until recently. I’ve had a couple of guys that I really liked decide to not date me because they didn’t want to risk getting immortalized on the internet, even though I change names and alter details to protect their (lack of) innocence.
Love your blog! Totally reminds me of my life exactly 10 yrs ago: 30, recently out of a long term relationship and dating randomly in NYC…2 yrs later I was married to a (mostly) great person and now I’m raising 2 kids on a farm. If that’s what you’re looking for, it can happen quicker than you think….
You have to be yourself and maybe your blog will help him get to know the real you. I am so glad that the date went well. I just love reading about your dating life. I just really can’t even imagine being in dating scene again. I give you credit sweetie!
I’m like the rotating list. That’s the best way to play it my opinion! Have fun on all these dates. I’m living vicariously through you!
I think it’s glaring obvious: You need to hook up with Austin!!! He seems like the most useful of the bunch.
