Well, that’s over with. I’m glad that I didn’t fret about Valentine’s Day this year. I think it had a lot to do with the fact that I didn’t have to worry about whether or not a boyfriend would come through in the romantic department. I’m just not a fan of the Hallmark holiday with its smelly roses and chocolates that are clearly targeting my ass and thighs. I suppose if I were to watch enough schmaltzy romantic comedies, I might expect Prince Charming himself to waltz into my life on a white stallion carrying a teddy bear and a box of chocolates. Until that day happens, I’ll be happy to spend it as I did this year.
It was, quite honestly, one of the best I’ve ever had.
I woke up early and made a monster pot of coffee to nurse my killer hangover. For the record, I am not an alcoholic though I’ve been playing one these last few weeks. That will soon change as I continue to settle into my life as a newly single 30-year-old. I’m not even really that newly single any more, though it still feels as though I broke up with Jackson just yesterday. It’s been four and a half months (not that I‘m counting, or anything). I can hardly believe it. Anyway, I’m completely off topic. My friend picked me up and we went to another friend’s parent’s house for a Valentine’s Day brunch. Surrounded by her wonderful Italian-American “do-you-have-enough-food-on-your-plate?” family, I couldn’t help but think that on this day of love, there is nothing quite like spending time with people who truly enjoy laughing together. Nothing else matters.
From there, we went to see one of the worst movies I’ve seen in the theater in years. It was BAD and Benicio Del Toro himself couldn’t save it (though he came close with his cute little button nose). Do not go see “The Wolfman” if you can help it. After giggling through that nightmare of a film with the ladies, we were joined by a few others and had a female-only dinner at the Cheesecake Factory’s elegant older sister. I can’t remember the name of the restaurant for the life of me though it hardly matters. During the course of our dinner, I managed to steal a few glances at some of the couples at the surrounding tables and have to say that what I saw was relatively uninspiring. It was hard not to notice that we were the life of the party. The couples seated around us, on the other hand, looked either nervous, or unhappy, or a combination of both. A young couple at the table just next to ours exchanged a few vacant glances and very few words as they devoured their meals. Don’t even get me started on the girl wearing a pair of skintight leather pants to dinner. GOOD LORD! If you can’t bend over, then you might want to reconsider your wardrobe choice for the evening.
Here’s my toast to the wonderful single ladies in my life: may we constantly surround ourselves with positive energy, good friends, and the finest wine. I’d much rather sit at the table and drink to your good health than shift around uncomfortably in a dress and heels and try to fill in the gaps with someone who is clearly checking out the girl at the next table. Thank you for a wonderful Valentine’s Day and I’m happy I’m no longer on the inside of a relationship that has turned sour. So Cupid, you can take your bow and cram it.
Well said, honey! Cupid can sit on his arrow and rotate ’cause that certainly was my favorite V-Day EVER! I’m so thankful for the beautiful friends that shared it with me. xoxo
Should I ever find that my single status changes I think that I may decide to boycott spending V-Day with my significant other and spend the day with single friends instead (and/or non-singletons who want to jump on the boycotting wagon). That is so much more appealing to me than spending it with someone who gives me flowers and chocolates because Hallmark said he had to.
You know, so many times in restaurants and other public places I look around and see couples that all look so clearly unhappy. Why is it that when we become a couple we lose sight of our individuality and we can’t do anything unless our significant other is coming along as well? I just don’t get it.
I’m telling you, some of the best Valentine’s Days I ever had were when I was single and just spending it with friends. It’s so commercialized anyway. We went out to dinner, but it’s not we made a romantic deal over it or anything. I really just like it because I love those candy conversation hearts. 🙂
I’m so disappointed to hear that The Wolfman sucks!! It looks so awesome in the preview! Bleh…looks like I’ll be checking that off my list. No way would I spend like $15 to see it in the theater now!
I’m glad you had a great weekend!
I’m not single, but I love my girl time. And if I was single, I’d still celebrate V-day. Friends and family are the perfect valentines 🙂
Sounds like you had a great weekend!
The last time we went out to dinner on Valentine’s Day the restaurant was ridiculously crowded. Our table was in the basement of the restaurant, which I guess was a private party room. The table and chairs were of the plastic outdoor patio variety. And the couple next to us fought the entire time…over the fact that the guy kept excusing himself to answer his wife’s phone calls. Yup, he was at dinner with his mistress and his wife kept calling him. It was insane. We laughed about the whole thing and decided to never go out on V-Day again.
i freaking LOVE this. and i’m not just saying that…well said lady!!!
“may we constantly surround ourselves with positive energy, good friends, and the finest wine” should be trademarked and said every v-day.
thanks ya’ll 🙂 and yes, i’ve decided to adopt this as my personal mantra 🙂
I have been married for 10 years… and we went out on Valentine’s day.
For us, it’s a chance to laugh at all the awkward first dates… or the couples who are both texting the entire date… wondered if they were texting each other. LOL
My favorite was the couple sitting behind us that never looked at each other and seemed embarrassed to be there. Classic!
Thanks for the visit and input!
I hate Valentine’s Day. I spent the day at home shopping online. Just another Sunday for me.
i’m glad you had a great day! v-day is so overrated…i think everyone should just celebrate it with friends. that would have been more exciting than what i did…italian takeout! i agree with alicia – individuality should be celebrated whether you are in a relationship or not. here’s to fun with good friends!!!
I am 30 and single and love it. I get to do what I want to do whenever I want to do it and spend my money on whatever I want. It’s amazing how much you learn to love yourself when you are single at this age. It’s a gift really.
Glad you had a great valentines day.

Found my way here from “The Society.”
I like your story. I was 30 when I broke up with my ex and I went on a little pretend-alcoholic binge myself. It was like I was trying to single-handedly recreate that movie “Party Girl.” … Until I was 32. :/
Congratulations on taking the journey to find yourself though. Even with all the ups and downs it’s a thrilling ride.
Hope to read more from you!
Oh yeah, and thanks for the heads-up about Wolfman. I wanted to go see it. Now I’ll wait til we can Netflix it, maybe.
Thanks for sharing a fantastic post like this, Good job!
