There were a lot of words that came to mind for 2022 but nothing that felt just right. Like much of 2021 (and who could forget 2020?), it’s hard to put this time into words, much less assign one word to another completely bizarre and unpredictable installment. Alas, I had myself a good think, wrote down the words that resonated the most, and envisioned what I WANT this year for myself. Because that’s what this damn practice is all about anyway. Not what someone else has in mind for me but what I want my footprints on 2022 to look like.It has been a bit of a rough start. I won’t go into details here but I am dealing with something currently that’s kept me off social media and the grid in general—I need time to process and that’s what I’m doing so I apologize if I’ve been a bit more silent than normal. That distance is essential and I’ll be back and badder than ever in no time, I’m certain. Anyway, there were two words that I kept returning to, because they seemed fitting in their own way. The first is simply ENOUGH. Some days I need that reminder that life is enough as is. It’s important because I find myself in a new stage of life that requires acceptance… the years have taken their toll on me but I am proud of this body and all it’s accomplished in this lifetime so far. But ENOUGH wasn’t it for me.
I played around with the idea of fitting ADVENTURE into my life, and while it certainly is a goal of mine in 2022 (JFC after nearly two years of social distancing and isolating I am ready to bust the hell outta dodge) but it seemed so… obvious? That I didn’t want to go that route. And instead, I am opting to EXPLORE–the neighborhoods in my vicinity and beyond, the coffee shops and restaurants that desperately need a loyal customer base, the bookshops and libraries that thrive on donations and passersby to pick up and cherish a book.
In the end, I can’t think of a better, more fitting word than EXPLORE. PS: That incredibly cozy image taken above is from Dolly Moo in Montclair, NJ. If you ever have the chance to visit, DO!
