I didn’t expect to get emotional, but I did anyway. I stood on that line six feet apart from the nearest person and just thought of all we had been through in a year. Despite the fact that I was in a room full of strangers, I felt strangely connected to every single person. The older couple holding hands. The young man in front of me who tried unsuccessfully to set up one of the National guardsman with his sister (what?? lol). The son who came with his elderly mother. The pregnant woman with her husband.

I don’t know why I felt compelled to tell the nurse about my daughter and how she came into this weird world a year ago but I did anyway. She asked me her name and her eyes crinkled so I knew she was smiling under her mask when she repeated the name *Mila* ❤️ and the kind woman who sat at desk 13 (lucky #!) and commented on my semicolon tattoo. I think our paths were meant to cross today 🥰

I didn’t think I’d post a pic of my sticker, but I’m doing it anyway. Because I’m so happy this nightmare is almost in my rearview mirror and I want to think about hugging my friends and breaking bread with family and dining indoors and traveling near and far again.

PS: Shout out to the Rockaway, NJ megasite location, Atlantic Health, and the national guard for some seriously insane organization. I was in and out in exactly one hour and everyone was so sweet and friendly ❤️

Before Bryan and I had Mila (which seems like a lifetime ago), we stayed in a small but cute dog-friendly hotel in the Poconos that had limited dining options and smelled like Dolce and Gabbana’s Light Blue perfume (I swear they were pumping it through the vents). We decided to bring Milo and I’m not quite sure what we were thinking since 1) it was our babymoon, and 2) our dog has zero chill. I felt like an Oompa Loompa and romance went out the window 😂 Milo was an animal the whole weekend, barking at neighbors, pacing the small room, freaking out over nothing, sniffing everything, and just being Milo. That said, I had waffles in the dining room one morning and, maybe because I was extraordinarily pregnant or perhaps because I just really love waffles, I think about more than I’d like to admit.

Anyway, that brings me here because we are hoping to get out of dodge for a few days and I’d like your recommendations for best breakfast places that are driving distance to NJ. It’ll be Mila’s first real outing so I’m hoping to keep it under three hours (also because I can’t think of anything more horrific than a screaming baby on a long ass road trip).

I have a few goals in mind for this trip:
✅ be fully vaccinated 💃
✅ finished with pumping so I can drink and enjoy life fully again
✅ eat all the things
✅ relax
✅ show Mila what it looks and feels like to embrace the open road 🚗

I told myself I wouldn’t write a long schmalzy post about Mila turning the big O*N*E but it seems strange not to mention anything when a year ago was simultaneously a lifetime and mere moments ago.

At 9:05pm on April 2, 2020 you came into our lives and changed everything. It was a weird time, but you made it less so. Or you adapted quickly to the weirdness and brought a calming energy into our home. We embraced it even though we had NO idea what we were doing those early days (some days I’m not sure we’ve figured it out yet).

We do things now like search everywhere for your special binky when it goes missing and think about all the things we’ll do and places we can take you when we’ve been vaccinated and the world begins to open up. I can’t wait for your first flight—to watch your uncle Dan get married to aunt Charis—and all the adventures that await.

We love you, little peanut. Happy birthday!! 🎂 🥳❤️

In honor of #nationalpuppyday I went through all of my Mila/Milo photos to find my favorite and this wins, hands down 😂 never change, Milo. We love the way your lip gets caught on your toofers and how you look at your little potato sister and the way you gently lick her hands when she eats all the foods that should go to your belly, even though (we think) you really need to be on a diet. Last week Bryan caught you climbing Mila’s high chair when she wasn’t in it to lick the remaining crumbs and we can’t ever get upset because you are who you are and you drive us nuts but fill our home with so much happiness. You’ll always be a puppy to us 🐶❤️🥰

I can’t believe how calm I look in this photo taken a year ago, when I was around 34 weeks pregnant and the world forever changed. My father was scheduled for bypass surgery in a few days, my mom was driving me up a wall, I was pandemic shopping for potato pancakes, dill pickle chips, and clementines (I know because I wrote it down in my blog and if that’s not that’s not the list of a very pregnant woman, I don’t know what is), and I wasn’t even sure Bryan would be allowed in the hospital for Mila’s birth.

The world was on fire and I put a headband and earrings on to meet my friends for lunch.

A friend recently asked me to imagine what the year would have looked like without the little munchkin who came into our family early April. I realize how trite this must sound, but I can’t imagine this world without her. And while her birth will always be an intrinsic part of this weird space in my history, I’m grateful she will always be a reminder of fragility, uncertainty, and ~most importantly~ hope 🌈❤️

On a side note: I’m inspired always by the strength of the women around me and how they have learned to navigate uncharted waters with grace and fearless optimism. You are forever my heroes.
