What a heavy start to the year it’s been, eh? How is everyone feeling and what are you doing to take care of yourselves?
I don’t want to make this space too political but it doesn’t seem right to gloss over the events that transpired at our state capitol building last week. And frankly, it’s taken me some time to digest the images, to process my feelings, and discuss coherently. I’m horrified (as I imagine—and hope—you are too) by the blatant disrespect for our democracy but also by the images of white supremecists who brazenly stormed the building to avenge their fearless leader and his constant LIES. And I’m heartbroken for my black and brown friends who understand racism on a level I’ll never fully comprehend. January 6th is a dark day in our nation’s history, but (I seriously hope I’m wrong here), I don’t think this is over yet. Are we on the verge of a Civil War? All signs point to yes 🙁
Last week was incredibly challenging, both personally and professionally, and there were a few times I wanted to just throw in the towel. As the news of the coup unfolded, I had to prepare my daughter for her 9-month pediatrician appointment (I swear, one day I won’t say I’m taking her to the vet lol). It was there that I learned she’s delayed with some of her motor skills and there’s a chance she’ll need early intervention if things don’t improve over the next 30 days. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t affect me; of course I believe my daughter is perfect as she is but I want her to be where she needs to be and feel a massive amount of guilt that she just… isn’t.
Some days it seems like the world is spinning around me but I’m stopped in my tracks. I know I have to keep going and put one foot in front of the other, but I’m so overwhelmed by this life and times we are living in.
And so (because I don’t want to leave things in a hopeless place) I want to begin focusing on positive things that are happening around me. Not as a way to minimize human suffering but because I feel as though we could use a dose of happy in our feeds. I’m working on a few posts and would love to hear from you if there’s anything you’d like to see featured here in this space.
Here are just a few posts in the pipeline:
—Positive things I’ve learned during the pandemic (like what to always include in your banana breads, best places for takeout, etc.)
—My favorite work-from-home attire
—A brand new planner that I’ve been loving lately (for under $20).
How are you doing, my sweet ones?
